Everybody has been through those days. Got screamed at down the school hallway and got called “fat” and “ugly.” Time has now changed, nowadays it could be done in a millisecond and seen by everyone. According to bullyingstatics’s calculations, “over 25 % of average teens have experienced cyber-threats online. More than 1/4 of people have been through this depression and sadness.” Often sharing harmful comments and inappropriate pictures on various websites and all over social media, mostly done anonymously, and that’s called “Cyber-bullying.” It makes me feel super uncomfortable and disgusted. It needs to stop.
Firstly, I must point out that most bullies are just doing it for fun. They hurt other people’s feelings for absolutely so reason at all. Other’s might just want others to feel what they have experienced. They’ll target weaker people and make them feel pain, so the bully will just feel better about themselves. Some might even do it just to get attention from the digital and real world. For whatever reason, they shouldn’t be doing it anyways because its extremely wrong. I have personally never been cyber-bullied, but I’ve definitely been bullied at school since I was young. It made me cry nearly every night and I often thought, “Why me?” Then I took my time to finally realize that the person bullying me just wanted my attention. I just ignored him and he finally stopped messing with me. For some people, it’s not that easy to cope with. It causes massive depression and anxiety for kids, teenagers and young adults.
Not only do young people feel depressed, they also feel overwhelmed, alone and embarrassed. Most of teenagers are cyber-bullied because of their religion, gender, race, relationships and their family. A high percentage of parents have no idea what their child is facing, just like my parents a couple years ago. So if you’re a teacher or parent, here are some signs from resources.uknowkids.com that a child is being cyber-bullied. He/She will try to avoid school. They’ll get anxious on the internet on the internet. Having trouble eating just like I used to have. I would have trouble eating, especially at the school cafeteria because that’s where everyone including the bully could see me. I even used to fake my fevers and my teacher would call my parents to take me home. It only happened a few times though. That’s how bad I felt every single day for at least 3 months in grade 6.
Additionally, teens who share their identities and thoughts online are the biggest targets. People shouldn’t share their very personal secrets and pictures. It has caused death to thousands of teen and young adult’s lives. Based on my research on various websites, Amanda Todd, a 15 year old Canadian girl got blackmailed by a stranger online. She got exposed for child pornography and committed suicide. Tyler Clementi, an 18 year old senior, he got caught kissing a man on webcam that his roommate hid in his dorm. The video went viral and the word got spread everywhere until Tyler couldn’t take it anymore. He lost his life by jumping off a bridge. It has happened too often and people still cause this sickening scenario. None of these innocent lives should be taken away by some cruel souls behind a screen.
Lastly, Cyber-bullies and bullies should be stopped. They make people feel extremely bad about themselves and they feel not good enough for the society. There has been more than enough lives taken away by these bullies. We should all help and warn the society to stop bullying in general because this is getting out of hand. We all need to help stop this permanently.
